Papercutz is pleased to announce: The Queen’s Favorite Witch Vol. 2

The Queen’s Favorite Witch Volume 2: The Lost King, by Benjamin Dickson (writer) and Rachael Smith (Artist), will publish August 22, 2023 from Papercutz.

The sequel to the beloved debut Queen’s Favorite Witch #1: The Wheel of Fortune, the story returns to young witch Daisy Sparrow as she navigates her role as Queen Elizabeth I’s right-hand witch, providing spells and curses at her beck and call. With constant pressure from the Queen’s advisors to marry and turn over her power to a male sovereign, Daisy finds herself in a struggle to protect her Queen from nefarious forces.

As Daisy delves deeper into her role as the Royal Witch, she discovers that things aren’t always what they seem and finds herself in way over her head. “Now firmly established as the Royal Witch, Daisy gets to really flex her magical muscles on the job for the first time!” said writer Benjamin Dickson. “And, perhaps inevitably, gets in way over her head… Rachael and I are enormously excited to bring you the continuing adventures of Daisy Sparrow and friends!”

Fans of School For Extraterrestrial Girls, The Only Living Girl and The Mythics will love this thrilling continuation of Daisy’s journey.

About Queen’s Favorite Witch #1: The Wheel of Fortune (2021)
Elizabethan England is a time of superstition and strange goings on. If you have a problem, it is common to go to a witch for help. And Queen Elizabeth I is no different! When Daisy — a precocious young witch — learns of the death of the Queen’s Royal Witch, she flies to London to audition as her replacement. But Daisy is from a poor family, and they don’t let just anyone into the Royal Court. The only way into the palace is to take a job as a cleaner. As Daisy cleans the palace, she draws the attention of Elizabeth’s doctor (and arch-heretic) John Dee, who places her into the auditions — much to the chagrin of her more well-to-do competitors. But Dee knows how dangerous the corridors of power have become, with dark forces manipulating events for their own ends. To him, Daisy represents a wild card — one that may decide the fate of many. With so many wanting her to fail, Daisy will need all her grit and determination to make it through these auditions — not to mention a sense of daring and adventure….

Queen’s Favorite Witch #1 was included in the American Library Association’s 2021 Best Graphic Novels for Children Official List, in the Older Readers (Grades 5-6) range.

"The colorful trinkets, flat backgrounds, and lax line-work provide a fun, simple atmosphere for Daisy to explore, and while the introduction provides historical context, even readers uninterested in Elizabethan England will enjoy following this young, likable witch on her daring adventure." – Booklist

“This is a cute, funny, and exciting story, mixing historical characters like Elizabeth I and Dr John Dee into the story of a witch who finds her way. With the energy and humor of stories like NImona and Kiki’s Delivery Service, Smith’s art is bright and colourful, featuring characters with wide, expressive eyes. VERDICT: For kids, teens, and even grown-ups who delight in historical fantasy about witches, palace intrigue, and girls learning to trust their own power.” – School Library Journal
