If you haven’t heard, comics legend Gerry Conway has taken over writing duties, and the new HARDY BOYS books will be 6 x 9, a much larger size with bigger comics! Gerry created “The Punisher” and also wrote The Amazing Spider-Man #121 “The Night Gwen Stacy Died,” one of the most revered comics of the last 40 years. We’re excited, but I don’t want to give too much away. I’ll leave you with another teaser page…

Looks pretty cool, huh? Well, you’ll have to wait until October to see the whole thing for yourself! Thanks for dropping by!

Hi There!

Editorial Associate Mike Petranek here, dropping by today because Papercutz graphic novels are getting coverage on the radio! In the coming weeks DISNEY FAIRIES and THE SMURFS will both be mentioned on several radio stations around the country! Here’s two examples.

If you live in Houston, Fox 5 KVVU will be mentioning THE SMURFS! You can see an article here about the Smurfs that says we’re based out of Texas! Well, I’m FROM Texas, so that’s probably how that mix-up occurred. Also, if you live in Ridgecrest, CA tune in to KZIQ/KWDJ to hear about THE SMURFS!<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:TrackMoves />

Hi There!

Editorial Associate Mike Petranek here because I am extremely excited about THE SMURFS graphic novels, in stores four weeks from tomorrow on August 31st! It’s been a long wait but we are very excited for Papercutz fans to see these graphic novels. The work by Peyo and Yvan Delporte is truly wonderful. Here’s a sneak-peak you won’t see anywhere else of one of the stories in graphic novel #1 “The Purple Smurfs,” called “The Flying Smurf”:

I can certainly identify with the Flying Smurf. Who wouldn’t want to fly? It sure would make getting to work a whole lot easier!

The advance copies of THE PURPLE SMURFS and THE SMURFS AND THE MAGIC FLUTE have begun generating some buzz. THE PURPLE SMURFS was recently named one of the five best graphic novels for kids and adults by tonic.com… And that’s out of all the graphic novels released – ever! We were thrilled to see this.

If you’d like some more history on THE SMURFS, I recommend visiting the Occasional Superheroine blog and of course, our good friend Matt Murray’s smurfology blog. You can also find information on THE PURPLE SMURFS in the August 15th issue of Kirkus reviews! I’ll be sure to post it here once it’s online. That’s it for now. I hope you are having a great Monday, and thanks for stopping by!

Hi There!

Editorial Associate Mike Petranek here, taking a bit of time to drop by and say “hello” after a great time in San Diego! Editor in Chief Jim Salicrup and I met a lot of great people who are very excited about the first two SMURFS graphic novels, in stores August 31st from Papercutz. San Diego can be hectic, but that didn’t stop Jim from finding time to spend time with our good friend Papa Smurf, who joined us at the Papercutz booth. See for yourself!

Papa Smurf and Jim!

Now normally Papa Smurf is three apples tall, but I guess he can get a little bit bigger for convention appearances. After all, he is very good with potions and should be able to whip up a growth one with no trouble!

We had samples of THE SMURFS #1 “The Purple Smurfs” and THE SMURFS #2 “The Smurfs and the Magic Flute” and everyone wanted a peek! Smurfic designer Adam Grano and letterer of all things Smurfy Janice Chiang both stopped by to see the printed books and we were delighted to see their reactions! Here’s Jim with a good friend of Papercutz, Matt, showing off a copy of “The Purple Smurfs”:

The Purple Smurfs!

We had a great time and want you to remember that you can already pick up a copy of THE SMURFS comicbook at your local comicbook store! Ask them to order it if it’s not in stock — it’s only $1 and contains the first ever appearance of Gargamel and his cat Azrael. We hope you find these comics as Smurftastic as we do. Visit the Papercutz website’s SMURF section for previews and more info. Until then, thanks for stopping by and have a smurfy day!

Hi Everyone!

Editorial Assistant Mike Petranek here to discuss Nancy Drew and the Dana Girls! For those of you who don’t know, The Dana Girls are a detective duo created by Carloyn Keene, the same person who created Nancy Drew! The funny thing is, these characters had never appeared together… until now! See the cover from NANCY DREW #20 “High School Musical Mystery Part I:

Nancy and pals George and Bess wind up in the town of Penfield, where they visit the Starhurst School for Girls. Once students hear that Nancy, the famed Girl Detective has arrived, they insist she meet Penfield’s own teen sleuths, Louise and Jean Dana, the Dana Girls! Soon, a good-natured yet highly involved contest is put together to see who the best mystery-solver is, and it’s in the form of a musical complete with clues planted throughout the school. There’s only one complication, the “phony” crime concocted for the Mystery Musical turns out to be real!

To read more about this graphic novel, check out this great review here. Visit the Papercutz website for more information about this graphic novel and Nancy Drew #21 “High School Musical Mystery Part II.” Until next time, thanks for stopping by!

Whenever summer rolls around I always get a little spring in my step, so to speak. With June having just begun, I felt it was a great opportunity to post a blog entry about CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #10 “Cyrano de Bergerac”!

This is one of my favorite plays adapted by one of my favorite artists. If you like action, comedy, and romance, this CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED edition is for you! Cyrano has been imitated many times over the years; one example that sticks out to me is Steve Martin’s film “Roxanne.” To read a review of the book, click here.

Of course, reviews are great, but comics samples are always a wonderful way to check out this adventure. Go to the Papercutz site for more info regarding Cyrano and have a look at these pages:

Jumping on to the stage of a play to protest terrible acting? Paying the price for it when he’s confronted by an angry mob? Cyrano is my kind of guy.

Cyrano de Bergerac will hit bookstores this Tuesday the 8th. We hope you enjoy it and keep stopping by the blog for more Papercutz news and reviews!

Hi Everyone!

Mike the Editorial Assistant here again, because THIS kid just won’t go away:

He may not be the best looking guy on the planet, but he sure is one of my favorite people out there! If you haven’t ordered your copy of TALES FROM THE CRYPT “Diary of a Stinky Dead Kid” yet, do so now! It turns out we’ve had to take this graphic novel back to press for a second printing of 3 times more copies than we originally had made because demand was so high! This kid is all over amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com and we couldn’t be happier. When you team up great minds like Ricko “Sicko” Parker, Stefan Petrucha, and Jim Salicrup great things are bound to happen!

We hope you enjoy this great edition of TALES FROM THE CRYPT. With Maia Kinney-Petrucha’s hilarious writing debut in DieLite, John L. Lansdale’s creepy sequel to “Night Traveler” from TALES… #7 to compliment Glugg (the Stinky Dead Kid), it’s a lot of fun to dive into this graphic novel. But alas, I’ve got to get going. From the smell of things at the office Glugg is here to pick up his paycheck. Time to stuff some cotton balls in my nose and greet him… >Sigh< I love the kid but I wish he’d wear some cologne!

Lansdale’s sequel to “Night Traveler” from TALES FROM THE CRYPT #7! Featuring art by Ricko “The Sicko” Parker and Miran “No Pictures Please” Kim, this is one jam-packed edition of TALES FROM THE CRYPT.

Are you still not convinced that this parody-filled collection of feary-tales is right for you? Well, you can go here for a preview of one of my personal favorite parts of “Diary of a Stinky Dead Kid” and see what you think! This link also contains more info on the graphic novel. It’s not in general book stores yet, so you’ll have to order directly from us. Be one of the first to get your hands on this fun graphic novel from Papercutz!

Hi everyone!

I know school has started for almost all of you, and you may be looking for some new reading material aside from what your teachers are assigning you. Feeling tired of Algebra, Grammar studies, or Chemistry? I can’t blame you. These things are all good, and you should absolutely read everything your teacher assigns you, but sometimes you just need a break from school, sports and videogames! That’s where Papercutz comes in.

Today I thought I would share with you two very different titles from Papercutz that have both received a great review recently. The first is CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED DELUXE #2 “Tales from the Brothers Grimm.”

What I’ve always loved about this volume is that while most of us know the story of “Hansel and Gretel,” many have never experienced “The Valiant Tailor,” “Learning to Shutter,” or “The Devil and the Three Golden Hairs.” These are great stories, and if you take a look at the following excerpt, I think you’ll see why Scripps News called this collection “beautiful” and “rewarding for kids, adults”.

How’s that for a cliffhanger! CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED DELUXE “Tales from the Brothers Grimm” is great reading whether your on the bus on your way to school, on the train going to work, or just relaxing. Just make sure you don’t read it while you’re driving. Sorry Bus Drivers, you’ll have to wait until your shift is over before you can enjoy this book.

I first began working for Jim Salicrup when Papercutz started publishing BIONICLE, and I’ve seen that title grow and grow! As some of you now know, we’re approaching the 8th volume with ALL-NEW stories and art! It should be exciting. Meanwhile, the BIONICLE Juggernaut continues to prosper. Just recently, WIRED magazine ran an article about BIONICLE that I think you’ll like. The author mentions the new story we published in volume 6 (Hydraxon’s Tale), and seemed to really enjoy it. Here’s a panel wonderfully drawn by Christian Zanier for “Hydraxon’s Tale”

All I can say is, more to come soon! BIONICLE 7 “Realm of Fear” is out in stores in November, and next Spring will see the release of BIONICLE 8 “Legends of Bara Magna”: the first Papercutz BIONICLE graphic novel featuring all-new stories and art. If you haven’t become acquainted with BIONICLE yet, there’s never been a better time to start!

In closing, now that Fall is upon us soon it will be Winter, when sometimes the best thing one can do is curl up with a good story and relax indoors to escape the bitter cold. What better way to do so than with a Papercutz graphic novel? I can’t think of one! Thanks for reading!

-Mike
