Today’s the big day! We’ve got VINCENT BOOK ONE: GUIDE TO LOVE, MAGIC, AND RPG launching and we’re so excited to bring such a beloved Brazilian comic to a new audience. Despite VINCENT coming all the way from Brazil, the series hits home with universal emotions of love, loss, and growing up that can appeal to everyone. To celebrate the occasion, I had the chance to interview the man of the hour, VITOR CAFAGGI, about all things VINCENT and his influences. Let’s get started:
Q: What does
Vincent mean to you?
A: Vincent represents the main reason why I do comics today. Which is to give back everything that comics gave me. When I was a teenager, and even before that, I did not have many friends at school or close to home. I was very shy and was always worried about something. Spider-Man comics showed me that I was not the only one like that. I saw myself in Peter Parker and seeing how he overcame his challenges, gave me the strength to beat mine every day. Vincent has some of that. In a way, by telling my story, I want to show people like me that they are not alone
Q: What would you like to say to this brand new audience who’s getting their
hands on Vincent for the first time?
A: Sorry if you think it’s going to be a cute story, with furry little animals living fantastical adventures and sliding through rainbows. That’s not it. Vincent is an almost autobiographical story about adolescence. The adolescence of a daydreaming young man, who plays RPG and loves empanadas. First loves, first disappointments, the end of high school and the beginning of college, bad decisions, right choices, and best friends. That’s what you’ll find in Vincent.
Q: What would you like audiences to know about the Brazilian comic book scene and what makes it appealing to a wider global audience?
A: The Brazilian comic scene is very diverse. The independent comics in Brazil are very strong. And in the middle of them, you will find comics of all sizes, of all genres, all prices, and all subjects. All this with the most varied arts possible. In addition to the indie comics, we have MONICA’S GANG. The best selling comics in Brazil for more than fifty years. They are part of our childhood and our culture.
Q: What American superhero would you want Vincent to team up with?
A: Vincent is a big fan of the X-Men! Also, Vincent’s greatest idol is Rocky Balboa. He’s Vincent’s role model. Yeah, I know he’s not exactly a superhero, but Rocky is a hero to me. And Mel would love to meet Goku.
A: As always I’m reading every Spider-Man title out there. Also, the Spider-Man comic strips collections being released by IDW. Deadly Class! (I love Deadly Class so much) SnotGirl, Isola, Saga, Akira and graphic novels such as Be Prepared, by Vera B, and The Prince and the Dressmaker, by Jen Wang.
Thanks to Vitor for answering all our burning questions! You can pick up your copy of VINCENT BOOK ONE today! And after you undoubtedly fall in love with young Vincent, VINCENT BOOK TWO will be available July 16th!
